The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a publication entitled Expansion of Medicare Telehealth Services for Calendar Year (CY) 2013 which outlines the newly-approved, telemedicine reimbursement codes for Calendar Year 2013.
These changes were included as part of the Calendar Year (CY) 2013 physician fee schedule rulemaking process. As a part of this process, CMS added eight new codes to the list of distant site telehealth services.
In addition, “the 2013 Healthcare Procedural Coding System (HCPCS) update will replace several Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes related to psychotherapy services and a number of these services are on the list of approved telehealth services. Therefore, CR7900 updates the list of approved telehealth services to reflect these code changes and it replaces several CPT codes related to psychotherapy services.”
These new telehealth reimbursement codes apply to alcohol and substance abuse, depression screening, behavioral counseling for sexually transmitted infections, behavioral therapy for cardiovascular disease, and behaviorial counseling for obesity.
In addition, this document outlines the new CPT codes that will replace existing codes for psychotherapy and psychiatric diagnostic interview examinations.
The Robert J. Waters Center for Telehealth and e-Health Law will be issuing it’s updated Telehealth Reimbursement Checklist after the first of the year to reflect these CMS CY changes in telehealth reimbursement codes.
