Telehealth and Occupational Therapy: Webinar Now Available!

Looking for a quick, yet thorough, rundown on the evolving role of telehealth among occupational therapists and their patients? CTeL is pleased to announce that a companion webinar to our latest report, “Telehealth in Occupational Therapy Practice: Establishing the Client/Provider Relationship,” is now available for download.

The webinar includes commentary and analysis from the report’s author, Daniel Rortvedt, who spent the past summer serving as a CTeL Policy Fellow. A practicing occupational therapist, he is currently enrolled in the post-professional doctoral program in occupational therapy at Boston University; previously, he received a master’s of science in occupational therapy at the University of Wisconsin.

Occupational therapy (OT) is one of the many fields where providers have recently begun to embrace telehealth as a way to connect with patients. Indeed, “the body of research-evidence within the field of occupational therapy has shown the use of telehealth to be effective by increasing access to specialist care and preventing delays in provision of services, providing increased collaboration and carry-over of treatment strategies, and improving overall therapist/client satisfaction.” But what does that mean for the patient-provider relationship—specifically, can it be established via telehealth? What other requirements, if any, are involved? The report examines in detail efforts that OT professional associations and state licensing boards have made to address that question, particularly “when state statutes/regulations do not specifically mention telehealth.” Further, it makes recommendations about what states can do to better provide guidance to OT practitioners seeking to utilize telehealth with patients.
