Member Spotlight: How UMMC Took Remote Monitoring to Rural Mississippi
August 27, 2026

For patients managing diabetes, hypertension, COPD, or congestive heart failure in rural Mississippi, the nearest specialist can be hours away. The University of Mississippi Medical Center — a CTeL member — has been closing that distance with remote patient monitoring, and in a CTeL member webinar their team shared how they did it.
Carly Brown, PharmD, and Kyle Brewer of UMMC walked through how the health system built and scaled RPM programs across rural and underserved communities — connected devices that let care teams track patients’ readings between visits, catch problems early, and manage chronic conditions without requiring a long drive to Jackson.
Two models, one goal
What makes UMMC’s approach distinctive is that it isn’t one program but two complementary care models: a pharmacist-integrated model, where pharmacists work directly within the monitoring workflow, and a nurse-driven model built around nursing-led outreach. Together they let UMMC match the care model to the condition and the community — from blood-pressure management to heart-failure monitoring.
