Veterans Found Relief From Chronic Pain Through Telehealth Mindfulness

A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine highlights the effectiveness of telehealth-delivered mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in improving pain-related function and biopsychosocial outcomes for veterans with chronic pain. The randomized clinical trial involved 811 veterans who were divided into three groups: one receiving group-based MBI, another self-paced MBI, and a control group receiving usual care. The study found that both MBI groups experienced significant improvements in pain-related function and secondary outcomes, such as pain intensity, depression, and PTSD, compared to the usual care group. The results suggest that telehealth MBIs are a viable nonpharmacological option for managing chronic pain in veterans.

Despite the positive outcomes, the study had limitations, including the lack of comparison with more intensive mindfulness programs, not addressing cost-effectiveness, and a high nonresponse rate during recruitment, which may impact the generalizability of the findings. Nonetheless, the study's authors believe that the flexibility and effectiveness of telehealth MBIs can enhance patient care by providing additional nonpharmacological treatment options for chronic pain, potentially improving implementation within healthcare systems. Nebraska pilots EMS telemedicine in ambulances, and solo EMTs are happy

Nebraska has launched a telemedicine pilot program for emergency medical services (EMS), enabling solo EMTs in ambulances to receive virtual support from emergency-trained professionals while en route to hospitals. This initiative addresses the significant shortage of EMS workers in the state, particularly in rural areas, by allowing EMTs to consult with physicians, nurses, or paramedics via telehealth, enhancing their ability to manage critical situations and improving overall patient care.

The program, implemented with the help of Avel eCare EMS, has outfitted 65 ambulances across 26 communities with telehealth tablets, facilitating real-time consultations during emergencies. Early results are promising, with increased usage and positive feedback from EMS personnel who appreciate the additional support and expertise, particularly in handling complex cases. The program not only aims to improve immediate care but also hopes to aid in the recruitment and retention of EMS workers by providing them with robust technological support in the field. Read more.
